Greco-Roman Art: The Getty

The Getty has a large collection of Classical sculptures of mythological subjects, including creatures, heroes, and major and minor deities.  The Getty also has painted wall panels and frescos dating to the Classical period.  Additionally, it has Greek vases created between 330 and 500 B.C.  The Getty Research Institute and library also have information concerning Classical Greek and Roman art.

Ancient Indian Art: The Norton Simon

The Norton Simon's Indian Art collection is part of its larger South Asian art collection. which includes sculpture, jewelry, and house wares from India, Thailand, Pakistan, Cambodia, Nepal, and Tibet from several centuries.  The majority of sculptures are of deities from each country's respective religions.  Many of these sculptures are made out of gold or stone. Several of the larger Southeast Asian sculptures are also located in the Norton Simon's sculpture garden.  I enjoy viewing this collection because it is so comprehensive.

Japanese Art: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Japanese Pavilion

The Japanese Pavilion at LACMA holds Japanese art work from 3000 B.C. to the twentieth century.  The collection includes Buddhist and Shinto sculptures, ceramics, flatware, textile, armor, archeological findings, cloisonné, and prints from the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods in Japanese art. LACMA's Japanese painting collection is housed in the East Wing of the Japanese Pavilion.  These paintings are naturally lit to approximate original viewing conditions. Japanese scroll paintings are similarly hung in alcoves within the Pavilion that are designed to resemble traditional Japanese living rooms, where such scrolls would have hung.
