Bergamot Station

    A trolley station from 1875 to 1953, celery packing factory, ice making plant, and water heater factory, Bergamot Station finally evolved on September 17, 1994 into a collection of artist studios managed by the City of Santa Monica.  Bergamot Station now features forty galleries that profile predominantly twentieth and twenty-first century art.  It also has a Gallery Cafe serving specialty food and beverages.
    The current "spotlight event" at Bergamot Station is the Andy Warhol: Love and Sports silk-screen exhibit at Bobby Greenfield Gallery through August 24.  Other current exhibitions at Bergamot Station include Jen Nelson: Interplaced at Gallery Luisotti/Ram Publications through September 7, Yoko Ono at the Shoshana Wayne Gallery through the end of August, Meg Cranston: Blueberry Hill at the Rosamund Felsen Gallery through September 7, Scott Katano, Memes at Ruth Bachofner Gallery through August 31, and George Jeanclos: Selected Work at the Frank Lloyd Gallery through August 24, among many other exhibits.

    The J. Paul Getty Museum is as much of an architectural as an artistic experience.  In addition to extensive permanent collections and current exhibitions, the Getty features travertine marble walls, fountains, cafe kiosks, two restaurants, the Robert Irwin Garden, and simultaneous views of the Los Angeles skyline and the Pacific Ocean.  In addition to the main museums, the Getty also includes a Research Institute, Conservation Institute, Leadership Institute, and Grant Program.
    The Getty's permanent collections include sculptures, photographs, paintings, manuscripts, costumes, furniture, drawings, decorative objects, and architectural elements from several centuries.  Current exhibitions at the Getty include Gustave LeGray, Photographer through September 29, Songs of Praise through October 13, and The Danube Exodus: The Rippling Currents of the River through September 29.  The Getty is also hosting free Wiggle and Giggle outdoor concerts for children every Saturday through August 24.

Japanese American National Museum

    The Japanese American National Museum's mission statement is "to promote understanding and appreciation of America's ethnic and cultural diversity by preserving, interpreting and sharing the experiences of Japanese Americans." Current exhibitions at the Japanese American National Museum include Common Ground: The Heart of Community.  The exhibit includes photographs and documents recording 130 years of Japanese American history.  Current digital exhibits put together by the Japanese American Nation Museum include Finding Family Stories, The Life and Work of George Hoshida: A Japanese American's Journey, and Dear Miss Breed: Letters from Camp.

   The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a museum housing a large collection of art ranging from ancient to post-modern.  The museum also features sculpture gardens, bookstores, and cafes.  The Los Angeles County Museum of Art additionally hosts numerous music concerts in genres ranging from jazz to opera, and it also holds several film events.
    Current exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art include A Century of Fashion: 1900–2000 through January 5, 2003, Exhibition of Art by Students of LACMA’s Education Programs through September 1, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682): Paintings from American Collections through October 6, William Kentridge through October 6, Seeing at the Boone Children's Gallery through September 2, and the film Wuthering Heights: William Wyler and the Tradition of Excellence.

Museum of Contemporary Art

    The Museum of Contemporary Art  features numerous contemporary art exhibitions, and it is the only exclusively contemporary art museum in Los Angeles.  Current shows at MOCA include sculptures by H.C. Westerman, on view through September 8,  the digital exhibit Momas, on display through September 24, and the  contemporary exhibit Zero To Infinity: Arte Povera 1962-1972, on display through September 22.  Although the Italian translation of arte povera is "poor art," the name refers to a genre of art that started in Italy in the 1960s. The museum is also currently featuring a Summer Nights concert and art series on Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  MOCA is also holding an Andy Warhol Does Hollywood event on August 28.
